About
Sujae Jung is a pianist from Busan, South Korea, and is celebrated for her emotive and honest approach to contemporary jazz. She has collaborated with diverse artists, including the bands WINDA and NA5, as well as through her Jung Stratmann project with Wolf Robert Stratmann. Their previous releases include Bird of Luck (independently released) and Live at 29th Street (released under 29th Street Editions in 2024). They recently released their second duo EP, Tree Huggers.
In addition to her jazz work, Sujae leads SueSoom, a solo live ambient music project that blends soft synthesizers with peaceful Korean sound elements—such as temple bells and nature recordings—to create calm, healing, and meditative soundscapes. She is also a member of Airplane Ears, an improvised Drum and Bass trio with drummer Dino Kim and electric bassist Wolf Robert Stratmann.
Sujae also leads Intertwined, a project that combines Korean traditional music and contemporary jazz, integrating sigimsae (ornamental melodic gestures) and jangdan (traditional rhythmic cycles). In this group, she performs with Ned Rothenberg (alto saxophone), Satoshi Takeishi (drums & percussion), and Wolf Robert Stratmann (double bass).
Through the Jung Stratmann Standards Trio, featuring Russell Markey on drums and Wolf Robert Stratmann on double bass, Sujae honors the African American music tradition with deeply rooted interpretations of jazz standards.
She has performed at various music venues across New York City, at the T.U. Jazz Festival in Toronto, Canada, and the Just Jazz Festival in Delft, the Netherlands, where she appeared as a member of NA5, as well as in other venues across Europe.
Sujae has worked with esteemed musicians such as Steve Cardenas, Marko Djordjevic, Axel Fischbacher, Ned Rothenberg, and Satoshi Takeishi.
She holds a Master of Music degree in Performer-Composer from The New School in New York, a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and an Associate degree from Kukje University of Arts. She also received a scholarship for the 2024 Living Jazz “Jazz Camp West” in California.
